U15 Hurling County Final

Mick Neville Park was the venue for the clash of Kilteely Dromkeen and Rathkeale in the U15 hurling 13 aside county final. The game was played in ideal hurling conditions with sunshine throughout.

Kilteely Dromkeen started as the favourites having won all of their group games in this seasons competition. However, Rathkeale provided stiff opposition and had the backing of a large home crowd for the game.

First Half: Rathkeale were the better team in the opening exchanges and they led after five minutes by 2 points to no score as Kilteely Dromkeen took a while to settle. An excellent goal from Christopher Lonergan after six minutes did settle the nerves for Kilteely Dromkeen, Christopher latched onto a long clearance by Sean McCarthy and soloed through the centre before firing high to the roof of the net. Jack Hayes then registered his first score of the game with a point from play. Rathkeale responded with a pointed free before Kilteely Dromkeen netted a second goal midway through the half. Good work by Patrick Rodahan set up Jack Hayes who put the ball into the far corner of the net from twenty yards to give Kilteely Dromkeen a four point lead. Declan Kenny then scored the third goal of the half for Kilteely Dromkeen running onto a pass from Dylan Holmes before knocking the ball past the on-rushing Rathkeale goalkeeper. Credit to Rathkeale who responded with an excellent goal of their own to reduce the margin. Jack Hayes closed the first half scoring with an excellent point off his left after winning a high ball directed towards the Rathkeale goal. The half time score line of 3-02 (11) to 1-03 (6) slightly flattered Kilteely Dromkeen as Rathkeale had registered seven wides to Kilteely Dromkeens two in the opening half.

Second Half: The second half started in Rathkeales favour with two unanswered points. Sean McCarthy was having an outstanding game at centre back and he scored Kilteely Dromkeens first second half score with a point from half way. Rathkeale responded with two more points to close the gap while Kilteely Dromkeen had a period of three wides in a row. That period was ended when Jack Hayes set up Dylan Holmes and he buried his opportunity in the back of the net to steady the ship and bring the lead to five points. Sean McCarthy then pointed a 65 to increase the lead to six. Once again Rathkeale responded very well as the opened up the defence before scoring their second goal of the game. The game was in the melting pot at this point and a long ball from the outstanding wing back Eoghan O'Dea set up Jack Hayes who rounded his man before striking over the bar. Daniel Gleeson and Brian O'Grady were excellent all through the game at midfield and they combined to set up Declan Kenny for a fifth Kilteely Dromkeen goal of the night. The lead was now seven points as Rathkeale went in search of goals. The full back line of Conor Egan, Shane O'Grady, and Josh Sheehan were not in charitable mood however and they limited the Rathkeale attack to just point scoring opportunities. Rathkeale did get three points in the closing minutes but it was the Kilteely Dromkeen captain Declan Kenny who would have the final say as he fired over from a tight angle after good work from Patrick Rodahan and Tyrique Leamy. That last point left a final scoreline of 5-06 (21) to 2-10 (16) in favor of Kilteely Dromkeen.

Summary: The old saying that goals win matches was clearly evident in this game as both sides created an equal number of chances. Kilteely Dromkeen hit 8 wides in the game to Rathkeales 7. Both sides must be credited for a high scoring free flowing game of hurling with great skill and will to win on display. The defence and midfiled of Kilteely Dromkeen worked exceptionally hard on the night led by Sean McCarthy while the forwards got goals at crucial times with Jack Hayes outstanding on the edge of the square finishing with a personal tally of 1-03 from play. Well done to all the panel of players, the management team, and the parents who have helped bring players to games all over the county this year. A special mention also to Rian O'Dea who missed the game through injury, everyone at the club wishes Rian a speedy recovery.
